April 26, 2006
Introductions and Welcoming
All attendees were asked to give their name and the agency they represent.
Review of January 25th Meeting Minutes
There was a motion by Pam Knight to approve the minutes from the January 25, 2006 meeting. It was second by Kathe Bagnato.
Website Development - Angela Bailey from Shore Connection spoke to the group regarding the updates that have been made to the website.
- Angela asked that anyone interested in linking to the site should contact her. She also mentioned that an agency could add their logo to the site. She has added Shore Memorial Hospital.
- All meeting and event dates are being added to the home page. If you have an event that you want included please send the information via e-mail to Angela. Mom’s QuitConnection was the first agency to send a banner on a conference. It was set-up on the home page.
- Angela reported the home page highlights would be the following: May - Women’s Health, June - Men’s Health and summer - melanoma awareness. Any suggestions are appreciated.
- Angela also spoke about eCoalitions, for coalition website development. They are willing to donate 50% back to the coalition for any agency who signs up for the service. Susan Sanna will have to check to see if the coalition can accept the donation.
NJ CEED Report
- Marge Scanny gave a report on the new patient navigator for the CEED grant program. The navigator is following breast cancer patients who have abnormal results and are non-compliant in their follow-up due to many reasons such as transportation, language barriers, babysitting issues, etc.
- Marge also mentioned the Breast Cancer Awareness Lunch and Learn on Saturday, May 13th at Stumpo’s Restaurant for African-American women. Doreleena Sammons-Posey from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services will be the guest speaker.
- DVD’s on Skin Cancer Awareness are being provided by Mollie’s Fund and the American Cancer Society. They are to be mailed to all middle and high schools in the state of New Jersey. It will be the coalition’s responsibility to do the mailings.
Committees Reports
- Professional/Community Education – Marge Scanny
- Healthy Lifestyle Events – Suzy Santay and Nancy Manderson
- Advocacy – Marian Morrison
- Palliative Care - Cathy Hooper
Professional/Community Education Committee
- A speaker from the New Jersey Office of Cancer Control and Prevention will be obtained to address cancer screenings guidelines. Marge asked Susan Sanna if perhaps Dr. Baskies would be able to be a speaker.
Healthy Lifestyle Events
- This committee is following up with a site visit to the Brigantine Schools through Dr. Previti. Suzy Santay is working to arrange a date.
- The next educational outreach event for this committee will be at the Egg Harbor Township Family Fun Day and Antique Car Show on Saturday, June 17th at the Egg Harbor Township Family Center on Spruce Avenue. The coalition agencies who will be at this event are CAT/ REBEL, Shore Memorial Wellness Department, Shore Memorial Family Life Services, Atlantic County Division of Public Health, Shore Memorial Blood Glucose Screening, and AtlantiCare Women’s Health & Wellness.
- Sowing seeds for healthy living will be demonstrated through seed planting of vegetables in pots. Each child will bring home their own planting. REBEL students will assist with this project. Free fruit and water will be given away.
- City Pathways Project – Nancy Manderson reviewed the idea for a walking program along the bike path. This would initially include Somers Point, Linwood, Northfield and Pleasantville. Monthly activities and incentives would be given to participants.
- A presentation would have to be done at each city council meeting to get their participation. Nancy Manderson spoke with each of the mayors and they were in favor of the project. This should be a competition between the cities and create a lot of enthusiasm amongst the residents.
- Pam Knight suggested that this could be expanded to Egg Harbor City and many other cities in our area.
Advocacy
- It is necessary to plan our strategies and tactics. This can begin with arranging appointments to see Assemblyman Frank Blee, Assemblyman Jim Whalen and Senator Bill Gormley. Many strategies are grassroot activities such as letters to editors, e-mails, phone calls and internet activities. Marian distributed sample letters to be used for various purposes.
- Marian reviewed ACS budget 2007 suggested talking points:
- A 35 cent tax increase on tobacco. The ACS is very happy with that and would support an additional 35 cent increase.
- Concerned with the lack of funding for the Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program (CTCP). CDC suggests NJ spend at least $45 million annually for a comprehensive tobacco control program. The funding went from $30 million a few years ago to $11 million.
- Suggest an increase in the CEED budget (5.4 million to 8 million) to include colorectal and prostate cancer treatment.
Palliative Care
- The first meeting was held on March 2nd when the committee identified its goals and action plan through a brainstorming session and an affinity diagram. The second meeting was on April 6th when the committee discussed the development of an assessment tool. Between the April and May meetings, a sub group met to develop the tool including identifying who and how the tool will be administered.
- At the May meeting, the tool was reviewed and approved by all committee members. The tool will be mailed out to Oncology nurses and responses will be reviewed at the June 22nd meeting.
Nancy Manderson mentioned that a year-end assessment was sent out. Only 9 agencies responded out of 55 surveys that were mailed. She asked that members take the survey with them and complete it and return it to her. Also, please fill in the comment sheet that is in your meeting information packet. It is a requirement from the NJDHSS and it is very beneficial in addressing the needs of the coalition.
Nancy Manderson introduced Susan Sanna from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Office of Cancer Control and Prevention. Sue Sanna, talked about the upcoming Governor’s Task Force on Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment in New Jersey Summit on May 11, 2006. Flyers were given out and all agencies were welcome to attend.
