Review of November 8, 2007 Meeting Minutes
There was a motion by Lisa Boccabella to approve the minutes from the November 8, 2007 meeting. It was seconded by Mary Jo Heib.
Website Reminder
Angela Bailey showed members the ACHLC website and reminded them that they can get meeting information, minutes and event information from the website. Any member who would like to have their events put on the website is welcome to email the information to Angela. Also, all members are welcome to be highlighted on the website under the member’s portion. Simply email the name of the organization, contact information and a brief paragraph about the organization to Angela. A logo may also be included.
Committee Activities
Members were encouraged to participate in a committee. The committees are where the activities are planned and organized.
- Community Education Committee – Chairperson: Joanne Kinsey
- Responsible for community education and specifically one cancer event each year.
- Repeat of the breast cancer fashion show.
- Saturday, May 3, 2008.
- A production of “Where’s Shirley?” will be in place of a speaker.
- Brochures should be ready by the end of the month.
- The committee is looking for additional members to join the committee.
- Next Meeting: February 19th @ 9:30am at SMH.
- Healthy Lifestyle Committee – Chairperson: Ben Mount
- Responsible for the promotion of a healthy lifestyle to the public in response to the NJ-CCCP and CHIP/MAPPS.
- The committee has decided to work on a guide (resource and/or walking Atlantic County). A subcommittee has been started to take on this project.
- The committee will meet again to discuss additional projects.
- Next Meeting: March 11th @ 8:30am at SMH.
- Palliative Care Committee – Chairperson: Lisa Aiello-Laws
- This committee is responsible to address palliative care issues in Atlantic County and to educate professionals and the public regarding palliative care.
- The survey is complete and the committee is working on an outreach plan.
- Public education such as some joint projects with other committees.
- Joint program with Cape Regional Medical Center’s palliative care committee to put on a professional event for physicians.
- Next Meeting: Today, directly after the coalition meeting.
- Professional Education Committee – Chairperson: Erin McAllister
- Responsible for one local professional event each year.
- This committee had their first event last year, which went very well.
- The committee is reconvening to begin this year’s event. It will probably take place in the fall. They will be meeting to discuss the details of the next event and to review the brainstorming activity the coalition completed last year for some ideas.
- Next meeting: February 19th @ 1pm at Gilda’s Club South Jersey.
- New (Smoking Cessation) Committee – Chairperson: Jennifer Pielhaus
- This is a new committee. They will discuss and pick both a name and an agenda when they get together.
- All interested parties should sign up.

Additional Projects
The coalition is also participating in a variety of projects that are not headed by a committee. Any member who would like to participate is welcome to contact Angela Bailey directly.
- Library Project
- The 3L’s Learning at Your Local Library
- March – June 2008
- 11 events held throughout the libraries in Atlantic County.
- Concept behind the event is to cover many topics of the NJ-CCCP.
- Looking for speakers, prizes and help to distribute and promote the event.
- Barbershop Initiative Update
- Anita Linton gave a presentation about the barbershop project. She explained what the barbershop program is, some history about barbershops, information on prostate cancer and what she is asking for from the coalition.
- Barbershop program: local barbers encouraging men to get prostate screenings.

- Youth Educator Badge

- Medical Explorers by Marge Scanny

- Melanoma School Project
- The curriculum is being redeveloped. This project is not in a committee, but a couple of committee members are helping with portions of the project.
- Pleasantville Urban Initiative
- Kim Archie
- American Cancer Society initiative to address and eliminate the burden of cancer in a specific urban city.
- The city has given us their blessing and is very excited about the initiative.
- The group is working on a kickoff for the initiative.
