Introductions and Welcoming

  • Angela Bailey, the new coalition coordinator was introduced to the coalition.
  • All attendees were asked to give their name and the agency they represent.

Review of April 26, 2006 Meeting Minutes

  • There was a motion by Rhonda Fitzgerald to approve the minutes from the April 26, 2006 meeting. It was seconded by Annie Valerio.
  • The coalition membership list was passed around for corrections/changes.

State Evaluation

  • Received a good evaluation with no major problems.  The coalition is in full compliance with the grant.
  • Membership development was addressed.  The coalition is lacking membership from educational, media, legislators and nursing association organizations.
  • Discussed the importance of having measurable outcomes or objectives for the events/projects the coalition works on.

Atlantic County Statistics Presentation

  • This presentation gave a statistical review so that Atlantic County information would be fresh in the coalition members’ mind while developing an action plan for the coming year.
  • Reviewed Atlantic County Overall Cancer Incidence and Mortality Rates, Priority Cancers and Populations of Focus for the Priority Cancers.
  • A copy of the presentation is available for anyone who would like to have it.  Please contact Angela at abailey@shorememorial.org

This presentation lead the group to ask the following questions:

  • Does the event achieve the ACHLC goals and the goals of the NJ-CCCP?
  • How do we generate outcome measurements from the event?
  • Is the event an effective way to target the at risk population?

Coalition Events

  • Angela reviewed some past coalition events, as well as, an example from another county and the events that are “on the table”.

Past Coalition Events

  • Family Fun Day and Antique Car Show – June 17, 2006     Well organized event which unfortunately had a poor attendance.  Concerned with what we are achieving when we have a table at a non-health fair function.
  • The History of Lung Cancer – November 2005     Excellent lecture that was well received.  Each smoker that came indicated on the survey that they would consider quitting smoking; however there were only 4 smokers out of the group.  May not have gotten to the target audience.
  • Paint the Town Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Lunch and Learn Workshop – May 2006   (CEED Event)     Fun day for underserved ladies that resulted in CEED sign ups.

Example Event

  • Hudson County Cancer Coalition:  New Year New You Media Campaign     Media campaign that resulted a 58% increase in the CEED screening numbers.

“On the Table” Events

  • Breast Cancer Survivor’s Show – October 2006     This would be a repeat showing of a well received event the coalition completed last year.  It was held at Boscov’s department store last year and hosted a fashion show celebrating breast cancer survivors.

The Shinning Star Award was given out last year to Carol Threatt for her dedication to the breast cancer awareness.  She has created great awareness within our community and more for the breast cancer stamp.  We will be looking for a new candidate for this award this year.  It should be someone who has made a difference in our community regarding breast cancer.

  • Lung Cancer Walk on Ventnor Boardwalk – November 18, 2006      The coalition has sponsored give-aways for the walk to the Nurses Oncology Association.  The monies raised will go to the South Jersey Cancer Fund and Lungevity.
  • City Pathways      The question was raised whether this was an event the coalition wanted to work on.  It is a large event that requires manpower for the events and for coalition members to take ownership for it.  It would consist of four events over a four month period in each city/municipality during the summer.  Teams would be developed representing the various cities/municipalities in the county and a contest would be the theme with prizes for the winners.
  • Breast Cancer Event with Doreleena Sammons-Posey – May 2007      This event would be an event focused on breast cancer outreach specifically to African American women.  It would be held in Atlantic City and have a speaker and lunch.  We would be looking to generate 150-200 women to come the event.  One way to get support would be to outreach through the churches.  Is this an event the coalition would be interested in pursuing?

Committees Reports

Palliative Care – This group is working well and is continuing with their survey.  The first group (nurses) was tallied and the next group has been handed out.  They will be tallied August 17, 2006.  The committee has two more groups to survey before they complete their project and report to the coalition.

Advocacy – This committee will be dissolved unless coalition members contact Angela due to lack of interest.  Marian Morrison will continue to report to the coalition and let us know when actions need to take place.  Rhonda Fitzgerald made mention that Marion would be looking for help regarding the Smoke Free Casino Campaign taking place on September 1, 2006.  People will be placed at the casinos to generate support for smoke free casinos.

Professional/Community Education – Marge Scanny reported that the committee has not been as active, but has much of the ground work in place regarding the professional event they want to host.  She will be in contact to get this going again now that the new coordinator is in place.

Healthy Lifestyle Events – This committee has not been active because of the loss of both the coalition coordinator and the chairperson of the committee.  If anyone is interested in being the chairperson please contact Angela for the information and requirements.

Business Committee – This was a proposed committee to work on bylaws, marketing materials and membership.  No one signed up at the meeting.  If anyone is interested on these topics please contact Angela.

 Website Information

  • Angela mentioned that she added the Atlantic County Capacity and Needs Assessment Summary and Fact Sheet to the website.
  • Please contact Angela if you would like to have your organization listed on the website.
  • Angela also asked the question whether the minutes should be on the website.  The pros and cons were offered, as well as, what other coalitions were doing.  They will be added unless members contact Angela with objections.

NJ CEED Report

  • Marge Scanny reviewed Atlantic County’s CEED numbers.
  • 2,983 women enrolled since 1997
  • 392 mammograms/1,066 paps for the July 05 – June 06 year
  • 30% in the 40-49 age group and 22% in the 50-64 age group
  • 50% White, 19% Black and 24% Hispanic
  • There is a need to bring up the Black numbers and the 50-64 age group.  Marge is looking for a workgroup to meet once in the fall to discuss ways to target women that would specifically qualify for CEED.  She will be in contact with the coalition.
  • Colorectal Screenings for July 05 – June 06 year: 33 FOBTs, 23 Colonoscopies
  • Prostate Screenings for July 05 – June 06 year:  17 PSAs, 2 Procedures

Coalition Homework

Angela asked the group to give her feedback regarding the type of events/projects the coalition would like to participate in during the next year.  The questions were:  What events would you like to see the coalition put together during the next year?  Please give the general theme and possible measurements to track?  All submittals should be emailed to Angela at abailey@shorememorial.org by August 15, 2006.  Thank you in advance for your participation.

Networking- Agency Presentation

There were no presentations this month due to the amount of material to review and the lack of volunteers.  If members have not completed a five minute presentation they are welcome to present.  Please contact Angela for more information.
