Additional Information on Committees

Marge Scanny spoke about the CEED grant, as well as some of the information listed below.

  • Melanoma Lecture – June 13, 2007 @ 7pm

    • Goal:  27 Friend to Friend Parties with 500 women educated and 150 mammograms.
  • Melanoma Project
    • This project is still in progress.  The curriculum is complete and we are looking into how to get it into the schools properly.
  • Youth Educator’s Badge
    • The project was formally presented at the coalition coordinators last meeting.  All the information has now been received and we are now ready to get started on the project.  The coalition is looking for a team leader for this particular project.
  • Additional Ideas
    • After the June events we will be reevaluating the activities for the last year, as well as the committee functions.  This is an opportunity for all coalition members to think about the types of projects they would like to participate in and create for the public or professionals.  Not every project must be cancer related and can be something that your organization is working on and may need help.  Please think about ideas and bring them with you to the next meeting.

It is aimed at healthcare professionals and is sponsored by the NJDHSS/OCCP, ACS, and is a program of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation.
    • The Breast Cancer Workgroup is collaborating with the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Central and South Jersey and NJ CEED to promote the 211 “Reach Out for Life: Somebody Needs You” campaign. The goal is to reduce Stage 3 and Stage 4 breast cancers and to screen 1,000 women and educate 10,000 women about mammograms. It is targeting African-American women, from Hunterdon County southward (13 counties in all) that fall between 250.1%-300% of the poverty level, which is above NJ CEED’s cut off. African-American women have a lower incidence rate of breast cancer but are diagnosed at a later state and therefore have a higher mortality rate than Caucasian women. Using the 211 health information phone line, manned 24 hours by care managers, women are encouraged to call in to see if they qualify for a free screening mammography. Komen is planning a new media push to promote the 211 health information phone line.
    • The Cervical Workgroup has formed a NJDHSS position statement regarding the new HPV vaccine. Awaiting approval by the Deputy Commissioner. The statement speaks to education, not mandating.

    • The Lung Cancer Workgroup continues to work with the Advocacy Ad Hoc Committee on increasing funding for comprehensive tobacco control from 11 million currently back to the previous budgeted 30 million.
